Help!
“I need your help.”
How do those words feel when they come out of your mouth?
A lot of us hate asking for help.
The reasons are varied, but my guess is that if you are someone who doesn’t like to ask for help it’s because you believe that it is a poor reflection on your ability to manage your life on your own.
I get it.
I also feel that way sometimes.
That said, I think we can both agree that it’s impossible to make it through life without a little help from your friends.
Yes, I know. That’s two Beatles song references already.
I suppose there are a few people out there who take advantage of others constantly.
I’m going to assume that’s not you.
You’re probably the type to hate asking for help when you need it.
If so, that’s your pride.
And to get where you need to go, you’re going to need to let that go.
I almost said, “Let it be.” No more Beatles jokes. I promise.
So, what’s the thing you absolutely know you’re supposed to be doing or changing or quitting that you just can’t seem to make happen? The thing that you know sits between you and your next great adventure? Whatever it is, someone you already know likely knows how to help you get past it. And they really, truly want to help you.
There’s one and only one reason they haven’t helped you yet.
You haven’t asked them.
I won’t make your homework to immediately ask someone for help.
Instead, do this:
Take out an old-fashioned piece of paper and a pen.
At the top of the page, finish this sentence: “The biggest thing that is holding me back from living my great adventure is…”
Then, below that, write the names of the first 3-5 people who come to mind who could help you.
Then, put the paper away and forget about it.
You’ll end up talking to them about it sooner or later because you just made it real.
Please, just try it. Do it for me.
Don’t let me down…
Sorry, couldn’t help myself.
Something else to consider is that, in making important life changes, they’ll feel appreciated that you asked. They’ll get to share part of their life and experiences with someone that can use them and do a good thing with what they know. If you ask the right folks to help you.
I don’t want to do the homework but I will because I’ve been stuck for decades and I need to do the thang already. That’s Joe for confirming God’s message to me.
