The "How, How, How" Principle
The most important questions to ask if you want to get something done.
Ready to actually get something done?
Here are the three most important questions to ask if so:
How?
How?
HOW?
Important Disclaimer:
I learned this from my very good friend Dr. David Horsager of The Trust Edge Leadership Institute. I highly recommend following David and his work.
Many of us know Simon Sinek’s wildly popular TED talk about “Starting with Why.” It’s very good stuff. It struck a nerve for reason.
But…
A lot of people know their WHY, but they don’t know their HOW.
I can’t overemphasize how much this has been my personal roadblock in life.
David’ stuff on this is so good. Here’s a clip of him discussing his How, How, How Principle. He tells the story of when he was asked to consult a major health care company in crisis:
The work we are doing here at Called For Adventure really is about asking yourself two fundamental questions:
The first is your WHY. This is your unique calling. You need to be able to clearly verbalize it.
The second is your HOW. This is your plan to live a great adventure.
Here is a practical way this has worked out for me in just the last six weeks:
My WHY became clear: I am going to help people find their unique calling and live a great adventure.
Then I had to ask HOW?
Here is how that inner dialogue went:
I will teach people what I’ve learned through my own unique experiences as a storyteller, pastor, improviser, leader and entrepreneur.
How?
I will create online tools that people can use for free to build a community, then do workshops and retreats.
How?
I will start a blog to share my thoughts.
How?
I will use Substack as a platform.
How?
I will write there every weekday.
How?
The very first thing I do every morning will be to go to a coffee shop and write my daily article.
That felt like the end of my first How, How, How process to launch this thing.
I am now doing the same process now for many other aspects:
How to truly build this community
How to do the workshops
How to fairly monetize
But, the point is…
For just six weeks now, I’ve done my first “How” every weekday.
The results as of this morning are below.
I don’t know what I expected, but I know one thing for sure:
These would all be “0” if I hadn’t decided HOW to do it.
If you are at a place where you know something that you want or need to do, but are having a hard time getting started then do what I did.
Just start asking “How” so many times that it leads to a simple daily task.
Then do that task.
Then connect with David Horsager on Linkedin and tell him that his best friend Joe sent you.

This is fantastic Joe. I hold a meeting every Friday morning with my managers...I know what we will be doing this week ;-)
Oh and btw, we've trained and already use the 5 "whys" for root cause stuff so I am thinking the "hows" ought to come pretty easy for us 🙄😂 I'll keep you posted.
