Last week I wrote an article around an issue that pushed people’s buttons.
I had a few people make very definitive comments disagreeing with it.
I asked one of them if they read my article.
They admitted they did not read it, but they said they could tell by the title and thumbnail photo that I was wrong about what I said in it.
None of what I wish to say today has anything to actually do with me or the people who were upset or that specific article
It’s just happens to be a blatant metaphor sitting there for us to unpack.
And you know I can’t pass up a juicy metaphor.
So, here it is:
Please “read the article” before you dismiss someone.
Jumping to conclusions is never good.
Prejudice isn’t fair.
Online you can just click the link and read the article.
In person, it’s more complicated to read the real story behind the facade.
You have to ask what’s on the inside.
You have to suspend judgement long enough to allow someone to open up to you.
You have to ask questions.
You have to be curious.
The metaphorical title and thumbnail most people walk around displaying is often misleading. We are all projecting a version of ourselves that isn’t entirely true to who we really are deep down.
So, please read the article.
What actually matters is what’s inside.
You musical theater nerds are probably already singing this song, so I will close with it:
